If you prefer the ambiance of a gated community, Harvey offers several for your consideration. On Lapalco Boulevard, a main thoroughfare on the Westbank, we find Barkley Estates Gated Community. As a child I was told Lapalco gets its name from the Louisiana Power and Light Company, which sounds right but I don’t know if its ‘really true’. This road you will see you through Harvey, Marrero, Westwego, and eventually to Highway 90.
Manhattan Boulevard is another busy up and coming business and residential corridor on the Westbank. Some say it reminds them of Metairie. Magnolia Trace and Village Green Gated Communities are off Manhattan Boulevard at what we on the Westbank refer to as the ‘quiet’ end of Manhattan. Harvey offers something for every taste, with many established neighborhoods, and newer ones with custom built homes.
Since the development of Manhattan Boulevard in the last decade, Harvey has seen steady growth. With great shopping and restaurants, this area offers many conveniences for residents. You will find the movie theater with sixteen screens, a bar, café, game room and rewards programs for its patrons. Harvey is also home to the largest library on the Westbank.
The Jane O’Brien Chatelain West Bank Regional Library opened in 1990 with 35,000 square feet of space providing books, magazines, CD ROM, internet access, microfilm and copier services. There is also a children’s’ department, and a teen center. Also located in Harvey is Boomtown Casino & Hotel, which is located on Peters road, just 15 minutes from the French Quarter. With over 30,000 square feet of gaming space and several restaurants to choose from.
